Wine & Spirit Education Courses

The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (“WSET”) provides globally recognised education and qualifications in wines and spirits for both trade professionals and wine enthusiasts.

We are proud to be a WSET Approved Programme Provider (“APP”).  .  We became an APP for WSET courses because they are the established benchmark qualifications in the world of wine and spirits, both in the UK and globally, offering a sound framework to support learning.  We believe WSET courses are the best way to ensure both our trade and private customers get the most they can out of their wines and spirits.

We currently offer two levels of WSET course designed to provide a natural progression to enhance your learning and give you confidence, either within your work environment, or when choosing wine for your own enjoyment – or both.  Both day and evening courses are available.

Why study with The Wine Shop?

All of our wine and spirit educators have passed the demanding and intensive WSET Wine Educator Programme for the course levels they teach – which means they have attended a course in London and passed rigorous tasting and theory presentation assessments to demonstrate their competence.  Although this is not mandatory for all tutors, we insist on this qualification to ensure our students get effective and up to date education which complies with WSET requirements, and thereby, maximises their chances of success in their exams.

Our educators have also gained WSET qualifications themselves, and know just how rewarding and enjoyable the courses can be when taught effectively.  They are also passionate lovers of wines and spirits, keen to pass on their enthusiasm and knowledge whenever they can.

The style of our educators is down to earth and approachable.  All students have email access directly to their educators so they can raise any queries outside the “classroom”.

Our WSET “classroom” is either at The Wine Shop HQ in Winscombe or at The Railway Inn Cider House & Kitchen, Sandford, Somerset BS25 5RA. The Railway Inn has an established reputation for its food (handy for lunch!).   There is ample parking, and for cyclists, the Railway Inn is very close to the Strawberry Line cycle route.

All course prices include:

  • WSET course book for the relevant course
  • Education delivered by an educator of WSET Nominated Educator status who has passed the WSET Wine Educator Programme and WSET qualifications at least one level higher than the level being taught.
  • A range of wines and/or spirits to taste appropriate for the relevant course
  • Spitting is recommended, so spittoons are provided.
  • Loan of ISO professional wine tasting glasses and a numbered tasting mat
